Amagansett business reviews, phone numbers, addresses, maps & driving directions of Amagansett, New York businesses
Amagansett is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of East Hampton on Long Island’s South Fork. Founded in 1680, the hamlet is named from the Montaukett word for “place of good water,” referring to a water source near Indian Wells beach. Original settlers included the Baker, Conklin and Barnes, descendants of English settles, and the Schellinger brothers, Abraham and Jacob, whose merchant father moved to East Hampton after the English took control of New Amsterdam.
A failed Nazi attack on the United States, called Operation Pastorius is a well-known World War II event in Amagansett, during which four German spies were dropped off on Atlantic Avenue by a German U-boat. The spies boarded a Long Island Rail Road train headed to New York City. A coast guard notified the local police and FBI, who subsequently foiled the Nazi plot.
The 8.1 mile hamlet (1.8 miles of which is water) has a total population of 1,343 year round residents. The “Walking Dunes” in Neapeague, the area that formed a bridge between Montaul and Amagansett following the last ice age, as well as the Atlantic Double Dunes is protected by the Nature Conservancy, as well as local and federal governments.
